TRIP TO SINABUNG - MEDAN

Hey guys! I am back once again with a post that I should have done like weeks ago or a month ago probably. I deeply apologize for this unprofessional delays and I must say that my schedule have been pretty packed for the last few weeks, so updating was difficult. In my absences I did a lot of things basically and one of those thing is actually a trip to Medan in island of Sumatera, Indonesia. This trip was done for a good cause and it was held on the 28th of March until the 30th of March 2015. So anyways without further ado let's just start!

Here are a few background information to help you guys understand the trip more.

Why did we go to Medan?

Medan was chosen due to the recent natural disaster that happened more or less a year ago in the mountains area. The disaster was caused due to a volcanic eruption that exerts hot air and volcanic cloud which results to hot volcanic ash. People who lives in those area had to be evacuated to a safer area and only until now that they are allowed to go back to their respective houses. Even so they will always have a feeling of being threatened by nature.

(Personal Justification: Sunlight still passes through even though there are boundaries)

We chose Medan -specifically Mount. Sinabung- because we planned to help them with adapting to a new environment and encourage children there to keep their heads up even in hard times. Mount. Sinabung was chosen because one of our teacher actually has someone she knows there which made it so much easier.

Who did I go to Medan with?

I went to Medan with my school friends and teachers that acts as the supervisor. This activity is actually student-led and it is a part of a social group called LBLS (Little Brother Little Sister) activity. LBLS is also a student-led and student-made group, so most activities are carefully though together and of course with full support from the school.

MEDAN

Our flight to Medan was quite early, around 6 in the morning. What was a pain was that we had to gather at 4.30 in the morning, for some unknown reasons I guess. We chose Garuda Indonesia as our airline to ensure all of the safety issues and of course the excellent service.

The flight took around an hour and forty minutes, so we arrived at around 9 in the morning. As usual we had to go to baggage claim first and all, so we departed at 10 from the airport to go eat lunch, since the airport is located quite far from downtown Medan.

Funny story, we were supposed to go to the restaurant first and then the hotel, but I have no idea what happened to me that day (probably I was malfunctioning), and I told the driver in to go to the hotel first. So, people in my car had to experienced my stupidity and odd leadership skills. Luckily the restaurant and the hotel was just a 10 minutes drive apart.

Another thing that happened was I broke one of the glass in the hotel's meeting room when we were discussing the activity we were gonna do in Sinabung. That proved my malfunctioning state. The hotel we stayed in is called Grand Serela Hotel, located on Jalan Gatot Subroto. It is a 4-star hotel and it was really nice I must say. (room details refer to vlog)

Day 1 was basically meetings and adapting to the hotel. Day 2 is where the fun happened. Day 2 is the day of our visit to Mount. Sinabung and it is located about 80 km from the hotel, so we were to depart early in the morning (around 5 in the morning).

On the way to Mount. Sinabung we passed villages, paddy fields, cliffs and so much more. I must say the scenery was very beautiful, it was like hidden Europe in Indonesia (and I had been to Swiss and Austria). We made a stop at this picturesque cafe by the cliff and took pictures.

It was really cold outside but it was all worth and plus when else can we experience cold in Indonesia.

We finally arrived at a specific area on the mountainside of Mount. Sinabung, where there lies a small village there. We arrived at 8 in the morning (wow a 3 hours drive, even in the morning) and I was touched by how warm they welcomed us to their village. That day was a Sunday, we were welcomed in a Christian Church, so as we were welcomed a holy mass also occurred. It was my first time in undergoing a Christian Holy Mass (cause I am Catholic and it was different in a way), so it felt so exciting and all of the songs were sang by this amazing lady harmonized with an electric piano.

The part that really touched me is that even in the most difficult time, they still believe in God and they do rely on to God as much as possible. They were all so devoted and determined (I can see their determination) to God. I might sound like I am exaggerating but I am actually not, they placed all of their fate on God's hand even if disaster strikes, because they believe God has a purpose for everything, even in situations like the volcanic eruption.

After they welcomed us, we were set to prepare ourselves in the activity of children enrichment or encouragement. It was around 11 am, so the sun was quite hot already. We started of the activity with an Ice-Breaking activity, the activity was dancing. Our purpose was actually to make the children more comfortable with us and more brave and confident, especially in expressing themselves. We danced to the song Happy by Pharrel Williams (with our own simple choreography). We divided the groups of children by age, and the younger ones get to sing local children songs (which you guys can see in my vlog)

Afterwards he had a half an hour break at 12 noon. We ate food that the locals made for us, which was really good in my preference and it was also our first legit meal of the day, since we didn't eat anything in the morning (we did request packed breakfasts from the hotel, but the hotel gave us three small piece bread that was good but unsatisfactory).

We then gathered back at the same area and grouped the children into age groups again. We divided them into two, Grade 1-3 and Grade 4-6. I tackled the older age group, we grouped the children into 6 or 7 people and this resulted to three big groups. Each of the group is given a piece of paper and they must work as a team to create an imaginary village or city. Through that village or city the children must determine what's inside the city and who will work there. e.g A drew a hospital and A works there as a doctor, because A's dream is to be a doctor.

After each group finished their work they were ask to present it in front of everyone else. Most children here wanted to be a teacher, doctor and police. There was one who wanted to become a priest and it really is amazing in my opinion.

At the end of the day we cooked them 'Kolak' (a traditional Indonesian warm dessert, consist of bananas and sweet potatoes) and just enjoyed them together. They were all so lovely and ambitious. They were all so happy and energetic in a way that me myself can't even compete even with so many things that limits them to actually be that happy and ambitious they are still able to feel that way. My only wish for them is to keep up their happiness and ambition close in their lives!

We then said thank you to everyone and donated some school supply to the children and also money to help the village in buying seeds to be able to regrow corps after the ash that killed nearly all. We departed around 3 pm from the village. I must say this trip is truly remarkable and one of the best I have experienced so far in my life.

Check out these two vlogs for a better understanding!

I thank you all for reading until this point and I do wish that you guys are here to support the people and the children of Mount. Sinabung also. I thank you all once again and have good day! God bless you all!

NORTH POLE CAFE - Pantai Indah Kapuk [PIK]

Hello guys! I am back once again and today I am just gonna continue the blog from last week, which is the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) blog. I feel like there are just so many restaurants in PIK that there will never be a stop to reviewing restaurants in PIK, this also apply to other parts of Jakarta, such as Kemang or Senopati. Well anyway as today's post say I will review the newly established dessert house that has gain quite a lot of attention, North Pole Cafe of PIK.

I visited this place on the same day as I visited the restaurant Locale 24, this dessert house was a part of the vlog that I did a few weeks ago. This dessert house is located in Ruko Crown Golf, Blok A No. 57, Bukit Golf Mediterania, Jl. Marina Indah Raya, Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta. To see the vlog about this place you guys may click here. Without further ado let's just get started!

North Pole Cafe

From the name itself I am sure people are able to imagine a cold kind of dessert, as in the food has a relation to ice or something. Well honestly this statement is true due to the fact that it is an Ice Cream house type of dessert house so honestly I did not expect a lot from it, since I do feel all Ice Cream tastes the same. But still nothing beats the feeling of visiting a new restaurant that is very popular and appealing. Before so, I do recommend you guys to book prior to visit, due to the limited space and there are just so many customers. I had to wait for an hour to be able to enter the dessert house.

The interior of this restaurant was pretty simple and some how cozy and bright. I love the idea of using like cartoon version of Siberian Husky, which somehow relates to the north pole kind of theme. The simple white walls is truly a good combination with the wooden based interior, wooden table and chair with wooden parquet flooring. Honestly speaking the interior is quite average aside from other available restaurants or dessert houses.

The wooden table does add a lively effect to the whole restaurant. I am a big fan of the simple and fun menu design which showcases a variety of colors. The simple design maximizes the functionality of the menu, The menu showcases a variety of flavor of Ice Cream that North Pole offers, but customers are also able to order directly at the counter like a normal Ice Cream shop.

Diablo Beer Flavored Ice Cream [2.0/5.0]
Rp 35,000++

Yes! Beer flavored! It is very appealing I must say, very new in the market and unique in a way. The first bite of this Ice Cream was weird, I am so sure this isn't North Pole's best Ice Cream since I do hear good feedbacks from this dessert house. In my personal reference this beer flavored Ice Cream is not a good flavor and I do not really recommend this to you guys, but if you guys are quite interested to try please do try it, everyone has different taste!

Enjoy Your Beer [2.5/5.0]
Rp 39,000++

Salted Caramel Creamy Pot [4.5/5.0]
Rp 37,000++

The 'Enjoy Your Beer' Ice Cream is actually the same as the first one it is just served with nuts which made it kinda better in a way. 'Salted Caramel Creamy Pot' Ice Cream was indeed beautiful, the first bite was amazing everything just melts! (well ice creams are suppose to melt) The flavor was amazing and the additional caramel popcorn with like salted biscuit was just amazing. Each scoop feels like heaven, this might sound exaggerated but I do feel like this was one of their best Ice Creams, but a cup of Cold Stones' Ice Cream sure beats this one though. I do recommend you guys to try the 'Salted Caramel Creamy Pot' since it is very unique and delicious, especially the pudding at the bottom (which feels like a big surprise!).

Choco Ferrero Flavored Ice Cream | Oreo Cone [4.5/5.0]
Rp 35,000++ | Rp 15,000++

This was also one of North Pole's best desserts! The Choco Ferrero flavored Ice Cream, which originates from the prestigious chocolate brand 'Ferrero Rocher', is very delicious, heavenly and chocolaty. A good escape for chocolate lovers who seek a different variety of chocolate flavor. The Oreo cone that was used adds an extra heavenly and sweet sensational flavor that was just simply stunning. The appeal of the Ice Cream is indeed worth all that also. I highly recommend you guys to try this flavor of the Ice Cream.

Smoky Pan [4.0/5.0]
Rp 68,000++

Finally we have reached the star dish of North Pole Cafe! This 'Smoky Pan' got its name from the serving style that uses Dried Ice and water to create a smoky feel and effect under the Ice Cream platter. This dish consist of five different flavors of Ice Cream and two choices of Ice Cream Toppings, I personally think that the overall dish looks really plain, but the color choices gave it life. As I said before, I didn't expect a lot from this dessert house, but my first bite surprised me as the flavor Ice Cream was just beautiful and refreshing, They were light and creamy which i may relate to my perfect definition of Ice Cream.Aside from that the flavors served are very unique and quite different from the other. I do recommend you guys to try this out since it is North Pole's specialty dish, but I do expect more from this particular dish.

This sums up my visit from the newly famous dessert house. Overall I would rate a 3.0/5.0 for my visit since I do feel there are so much more better kinds of Ice Cream and Ice Cream shops. I do feel that they are trying to sell the appearance and the visual, but restaurants nowadays are all like that so there is nothing wrong with it. The saying "We are what we eat" forces us to eat things that is to die for from every aspect, which includes the visual also, so I do feel that people are pushed even further by the visual aspect.

Overall my visit at North Pole Cafe was really good and I would probably go back here later when the dessert house becomes less crowded. This ends my post for today and thank you so much for reading until this point! Have a good day everyone!

LOCALE 24 - Pantai Indah Kapuk [PIK]

Hey guys! Yes I am finally back after weeks of being absent. In my absence, I prepared quite a lot of posts and a couple of videos for my Youtube Channel. One of the main factor of my absence was actually because of school. School had been very tiring and stressful, so that limits my access to blog/vlog. Anyways I did a Vlog last time in Youtube (which you guys can see here) about my trip to PIK (on February) and I did promise you guys to post the details of the places I visited so yeah here it is.

I did a review about this restaurant already and I do feel that this place is quite popular already, but I am starting to have different view about this restaurant. I didn't take pictures of the exterior, as I did take some pictures already in the previous Locale 24 post (which you guys can see here) so in today's post I am just gonna focus on the food and the price aspect.

Locale 24 Diner and Bar

First things first was of course the food, starting with the food that I ordered. It was the  Honey Pepper Chicken & Shrimp. Why did I order this? It is because I like to try something different and new, since this was my third visit in this restaurant. I was excited to try it out because it was one of the chef's recommendation.

The food gave me a bad impression at first, because it was literally the last dish to enter our table. I shared it with my friend, despite the unsatisfying portion. I shared because honestly I wasn't that hungry that time.

Honey Pepper Chicken and Steak [3.5/5.0]
Rp 62,000++

Honestly speaking the dish was good and it was cook to perfection, but I do feel like it is lacking something. I really like the fact that they served it with potatoes and vegetables which lift up the dish. They also served a bit of macaroni and cheese on a small plate on the sides. I do recommend this dish if you guys are in seek of something light and healthy, but I also feel like this isn't really Locale's best dish, so I do recommend you guys try some other dishes first.

The next food is an all time favorite comfort food in America, Macaroni and Cheese. I do say they have one of the best Macaroni and Cheese here and the price is indeed very affordable. It was not a chef's recommendation, but I do feel that for something that good with a price that friendly surely made me and my friends smile that day.

Macaroni and Cheese [4.5/5.0]
Rp 38,000++

I love the fact that they served it with an oversize cup (which acts as a bowl) it is juts very cute and gave that childish feel that suits the whole theme of the dish. I do feel that the Chicken Strips weren't really that necessary, but it added quite a wonderful taste to the overall dish. This dish in my opinion is just simple and delicious. It was also the first dish to arrive on our table, so it surely made everyone smile. I do feel that the macaroni lacks cheese and might taste quite common for some, but I do suggest you guys to try it out as it is a good option for an affordable lunch.

The next dish is quite similar to the previous one as it is another American all time favorite dish, Beef Burger, Served with french fries, cheese, eggs and a small plate of Macaroni and Cheese this dish was surely one of the best dish that I tried.

Beef Burger [4.0/5.0]
Rp 62,000++

What I love about this burger is that it is served with a variety of side dish which really pleased me, because it delivers a variety of flavor in each bite. The Macaroni and Cheese here is served with a similar method as the first dish, but aside from that the serving formation was common to every other burger in restaurants. This was also not a part of the chef's recommendation and I feel that this dish do need to improve a bit more on their meat quality and bread quality. Overall I do recommend you guys to try this out, especially if you guys are seeking for an affordable yet fulfilling burger meal (In my opinion I do feel that burgers from burger's joints are way better).

The next dish is one of my favorite dish this restaurant offers, it is the Fish and Chips. It is absolutely delicious in my opinion, it is seasoned to perfection and the texture of the fish was amazing, fluffy and it simply melts in your mouth.

Fish and Chips [5.0/5.0]
Rp 62,000++

I am honestly surprised that this dish wasn't one of the chef's recommendation. It was served simply with french fries and tartar sauce that was just fresh and a perfect complementary sauce for Fish and Chips. This was not my first time eating the Fish and Chips here, but the previous one I had was somehow better in a sense that the fish was cooked to a better state rather than this one which was a bit burnt. The only part that saddens me is the small portion. I highly recommend this dish to all of you guys as it is one my all tine favorite dishes.

The last dish that I tried was the Country Fried Steak Yee-Haw! and yes the 'Yee-Haw' part is the actual name of the dish. This dish in my opinion is very common and average, but I am saying this because I was never a big fan of Country Fried Steak so yeah. I'm not trying to be biased here so I do say it was quite good and I feel that crispiness was perfect for a Country Fried Steak and it was simply served with Cream Spinach and French Fries.

Country Fried Steak Yee-Haw! [4.0/5.0]
Rp 62,000++

Surprisingly this was one of the chef's recommendation as I do feel that this dish is quite average, not being biased because I feel that some places has better country fried steak. A part of the dish that was really good was the cream spinach as it was a good complementary to a dish like this. The spinach gave a fresh and lighter feel to the overall dish. I do recommend this to all of you guys there if you are a fan of Country Fried Steak.

That is it guys for today's post and I do thank all of you for reading this post until this point. I would personally like to thank all of my friends for making this trip a success. Thank you guys once again and have an awesome day!
